Inflammable Material - Album in Review

SLFInflammableMaterial.jpg

This weeks album is the infamous "Inflammable Material" by Northern Irish band "Stiff Little Fingers", a band and an album who tackle what it's like to live through the Troubles in Northern Ireland head on. With many major bands and artists listing the album as their inspiration (Green Day for example) quality is assured.

Inflammable material was one of the best selling independent records ever, helping launch Stiff Little Finger's career.

This raw, gritty album really puts you back into the thick of the troubles - decades later. The stand out songs for me are "Suspect Device", "Wasted Life" , "Alternative Ulster" and "White Noise". All in all Inflammable Material is a timeless punk classic by a severely underrated band.

TRACK LISTING
  1. "Suspect Device" – 2:36
  2. "State of Emergency" (Burns) – 2:29
  3. "Here We Are Nowhere" (Henry Cluney) – 1:00
  4. "Wasted Life" (Burns) – 3:10
  5. "No More of That" (Cluney) – 2:04
  6. "Barbed Wire Love" – 3:33
  7. "White Noise" – 1:57
  8. "Breakout" (Burns) – 3:04
  9. "Law and Order" – 3:14
  10. "Rough Trade" – 2:41
  11. "Johnny Was" (Bob Marley) – 8:12
  12. "Alternative Ulster" – 2:45
  13. "Closed Groove" – 4:25

Bat Out of Hell - Album in Review

Bat Out of Hell is one of the all time best selling albums ever, period. To put it into perspective, Bat Out of Hell has sold more units than ANY Rolling Stones album.

Bat Out of Hell was the second album released by Meatloaf of  Broadway and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" fame. It was his first collaboration on an album with songwriter Jim Steinman, whom he had met through "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

The album was recorded in 1975 but not released until 1977, many record companies didn't see the massive Meatloaf appealing to any sort of audience.

The reception that the album received was cold at best. Initially critics were unimpressed as the music could not be pegged into a specific genre, yet sales grew and grew (albeit slowly at first). Bat Out of Hell went on to become a massive hit in Europe, Australia and the US.

It's stayed in the UK album charts for 485 weeks, a feat only surpassed by Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors".

Annually Bat Out of Hell sells in excess of 200'000 copies, being rediscovered year on year by a new, younger audience. Bat Out of Hell is a must for any music collection and it has earned its place in the history books.
